MY LYME STORY
by Aneta Kubicka

Before falling ill with Lyme disease, my life was characterised by boundless energy and purpose. I maintained a busy schedule, juggling a full-time job, evening classes in college, and an active lifestyle filled with sports and other activities. Together with my loving husband, I relished the joy of travel, exploring new destinations and creating cherished memories. Life felt fulfilling, and I believed I was on the cusp of something extraordinary.

Everything changed in October 2019 when I was bitten by a home spider, unwittingly setting off a cascade of chronic Lyme disease (triggers dormant Lyme disease) and exposing me to additional bacteria and viruses. The impact was swift and severe, confining me to bed for weeks on end. Despite seeking medical help, my condition continued to deteriorate, leaving me frustrated and bewildered by dismissive doctors who failed to recognise my symptoms.

The array of symptoms I experienced was overwhelming: persistent fever, flu-like sensations, excruciating headaches, joint and muscle pain, constant drowsiness, excessive sweating, and debilitating fatigue. Basic daily tasks became insurmountable obstacles, plunging me into a disorienting and distressing period of my life.

In January 2020, I took matters into my own hands and sought a Lyme disease test from a Polish GP. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to wait until May for my test results.

In search of comprehensive diagnostics, I travelled to Poland for an extensive and costly diagnostic process. The results revealed not only Lyme disease but also five co-infections, viral infections, a severe intestinal condition, nitrosative stress, and neurotransmitter disorders. Throughout my journey, I underwent numerous tests to monitor my health and guide treatment decisions. Accurate diagnostics played a crucial role in tailoring therapies to my specific needs.

Healing from Lyme disease proved to be a complex journey, as the illness often mimics other conditions. I discovered that a combination of treatments was key to combating the infection within my body. Throughout my recovery, I explored more than 20 different therapies, blending modern and traditional approaches. Each treatment and therapy I underwent aimed to boost my immune system and maintain my overall well-being. From ozone and oxygen therapy to intravenous infusions of vitamins and minerals, infrared sauna sessions, salt baths, massages, frequency-based machines, and various traditional medicine therapies, I embraced a holistic approach to healing.

While this journey had its challenges, including hospitalisations and setbacks, I take solace in the fact that my body is progressively moving towards recovery. The physical, emotional, and social impact of Lyme disease was profound. To cope with the difficulties, I focused on self-care, upskilling myself on Lyme disease, spending quality time with loved ones, and seeking professional support for my mental and emotional well-being. Yoga became a cornerstone of my healing journey, providing strength and serenity.

My battle with Lyme disease transformed me as a person, unveiling inner strength and a newfound belief in myself and my intuition. I delved deep into understanding my body’s intricacies, needs, and desires, fostering self-awareness and a profound connection with my physical being. It prompted a profound shift in my perspective on life, leading to comprehensive changes in my lifestyle and a heightened focus on mental and emotional well-being.
